Rammstein Engel lyric with English translation

Home » Rammstein Lyrics » Rammstein Engel lyric with English translation

Who in their lifetime is good on Earth
and will become an angel after death
you look to the sky and ask
why can't you see them

First if the clouds have gone to sleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and alone

God knows I don't want to be an angel

They live behind the sunshine
separated from us, infinite expanse
they must cling to the stars (very tightly)
so they won't fall from the sky

First if the clouds have gone to sleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and alone

God knows I don't want to be an angel

First if the clouds have gone to sleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and alone

God knows I don't want to be an angel

This song is about how some people believe in angels, and that good people become them after death, but we wonder why we never can see them. The lyrics of this song can also be seen as doubting the existence of God. Near the end of each chorus, Till states, “God knows I don’t want to be an angel.”

  • A fan

,,wenn” can mean “if” or “when” in German. ,,Erst” is used for emphasis as in “Erst wenn die Wolken…” to stress the fact that you can see the angels only after the clouds have gone to sleep. I think the translation of ,,wenn” to mean “if” is incorrect. Wenn die Wolken schlafengeh(e)n is more neutral. Adding ,,erst” seems to go along with the idea that it is quite difficult to see angels and that this only occurs under specific circumstances.

  • SubZeroKiss

I think this song is about how lonely and isolated and distant to society purely innocent people get after a while. because this is the jungle not heaven. and they would basically have nothing in common with anybody

  • Monster

Um.. you actually believe angels exist? BWAAHAHAAHA!! Hue Arrrrre Stoooopit!

  • vivian greer

lisa is right, those are indeed the lyrics in german. when you translate to english it totally changes because of sentence structure and they need to make it rhyme. if you listen to the english version, james has it right word for word

  • Cris

That’s the lyric for Rammstein Engel ( English version)

  • chely

    i love this song!

  • Heidi E. Nielsen

no one really knows .. i think that before becoming an angel , u have to meet judas.. there is no heaven without hell.. it can´t be translated .. its a question to people : do u want to be judas or one of the saints… because u can´t be a saint before meeting judas .. thats how i interpret this song..

I have always felt that these lyrics convey an anti-prudish sentiment shared by most of us who live in insufferably sex-negative societies (e.g. America) It’s like “Fuck being an ‘angel.’ I don’t want to be swallowed up in self righteous, sexual repression in the hope that I will be seen as someone ‘pure’ after I’ve acheived room temperature! I want to be a real person who makes friends with his appetties-safely & responsibly fulfilling them with every consenting adult I can find until the day the rest of my body turns as stiff as my cock usually is (or ‘until the pussy is forever dry’ for the ladies.)

I think Engel is one of the best songs I’ve heard in along time and the video kick’s azz..It makes perfect sense to me.. I feel the same way

  • Lisa

Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein = God knows I don’t want to be an angel.

And yes, that’s what they really sing. You can trust me, I live next to Germany and had 4 years of German class. Thank you. :)

James lyrics posted two years ago are NOT correct at all. It hardly makes sense, sorry.

  • Fallen Angel

I agree with charasmatic enigma. And like he/she said, its a farfetched idea, but for the rammstein english version it would make sense. But, seeing as I prefer the german version, as there seems to be more soul in it.
And @ tutata49, please stay on topic of the song, as far as i know, the general populace dosent appreciate preeching of one’s beliefs.
    Un chanson tres fantastique.

  • Charismatic Enigma

    @Tutata49 –
I’m not saying I do or don’t believe what I said about earth-dwellers’ souls having formerly been angels in Heaven. However, I know a couple of people who do believe this, and I think it’s fair to say that this song could be interpreted that way. …Also, I would greatly appreciate it if you didn’t state your personal beliefs as if they were facts.

  • tutata49

Angels are an entirely different order of creation; it is not true that some humans become angels when they die. Angels were created in perfection, and there is a limited number of them (this does not mean there is a small number of angels); while humans are the smallest of all creation. Perfection is every human’s goal, not their starting point.

  • http://youtube.com/user/flamingpoodleofdoom FlamingPoodleOfDoom

Love this song; I think its about how none of us are perfect.
The song states that we wouldn’t want to be angels anyhow because its even lonelier to be an angel then a human.
Anyhow, you have no freewill as an angel so why would you ever want to be one??

  • Rammspieler

    Dear Joe:
The english version is not a translation. It is merely an adaption, so as to keep similar rhythm and rhyme. This is the same as with Du Hast. As the “catchphrase” in the english version is “You Hate”, this has mislead some to believe that this is the translation of Du Hast. However, Du HASST means You Hate. Sorry if you already knew, just trying to help. :)

  • das seemann

i like this song….reminds me of my childhood i guess

  • Charismatic Enigma

    Small note:

I think that some listeners have a point when they misinterpret the lyrics as “God, damn not an angel when I die!” when the actual lyrics read “Goddamn; not an angel when I die!”

This lends itself to another, if a little farfetched, meaning to the lyric: if an earth-dweller’s soul was an angel in Heaven, the speaker does not want God to damn another angel for the sake of a mortal soul.

  • Charismatic Enigma

The English version of this song was composed by Rammstein in order to appease the band’s publicist/producer in America, who felt that at least a couple very catchy songs in English would lead to a greater ability to reach new fans.

This worked, of course, but with one problem: the band has admitted that they aren’t very fond of the English versions.

  • andressa

    1/4 = müssen…

  • Jonathan

Once again the lyric is nothing, almost silly probably

    who cares tho?

  • Tom

I have it. If you can see angles in the sky then would man gayggan man in clear view?

  • DR4G0N5 F1R3

WTF with the random ¼ sign?

  • Jonathan

    no comment of the lyric

but the song is cool tho not my Rammstein' best song

  • Tom

ya, James gotta good poem. The video changes your mind because of the almost naked lady feeding booze to a man who is in great desire of her flesh. Simply put, do you wonder why if there are angels, why do they ride motor cycles and say that they are from hell, and get away with it….or do they? do you wonder why, if there is no pizza in africa the reason for starvation is that no one knows how to cook it? .. . . . .or are there angels preventing this – the ones that have fallen from the sky

  • James

I think this is the proper English version:

    Live in virtue, no desire

In the grave an angel's choir

You look to heaven and wonder why

No one can see them in the sky

Just as the clouds have gone to sleep

Angels can be seen in heaven's keep

Alone in fear they question why

Goddamn not an angel when I die

    Angels live, they never die

Apart from us, behind the sky

They're fading souls who've turned to ice

    So ashen white in paradise

Just as the clouds have gone to sleep

Angels can be seen in heaven's keep

Alone in fear they question why

Goddamn not an angel when I die

Goddamn an angel when I die

Heaven must be hell in the sky

  • James

@Joe, you are correct. There is an english version on the album and this translation is WAY off from that.

    • brianna

they make the english versions rythme in english not as translations for the retards who won't learn german

So God knows i dont want to be an angel means “i’ll keep on sins” what do ya think?

  • Tom

the crew leaving the building in the video says they don’t want to be part of a god and his angles that hide. They are saying, no thanks, if that is what you are about, I don’t want to know you. If there is no beer in heaven then fuck you.

  • Rinestein-47

the lyrics are wrong they are not like this

  • Malach

Everybdy schould find the "true meaning" for himself.

My "true meaning" could be other that yours.

  • Dustin

We can all think we know whats being said but we will probly never know the true meaning of this song or any of them for that matter but hey we enjoy the songs right.

  • ZackV

I think its "God knows I dont want to be an angel", seems more implace

  • Segeta

I think it's a very sad song about prostituts of womans, children and (we can se in the music video in the end) mans.

Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein.

–> the Girl (child/man) is a angel for the man (woman)

I have analyse the lyric (I'm a german fan)… You can beliv me :)

  • Rocco

totally agree with that… I'm learning german through this website so.. I wouldn't have been able to realize what you have just said without the english translation on the side :P

    (or without your comment:P)

    PS: I'm Argentinian too!!

  • joe

i thought he said something about god sending another angel when he dies… i have the English version and know close to no German

    • Mariana

I’m Argentinian, but speak english and undestrand just a bit of german.

What I think is that the lyrics is trying to describe some kind of inexplainable feeling of darkness and lonelyness. Some felling of never reaching what sould be done. We are not angels (and don’t wan’t to be)…it’s impossible to reach perfection.

    • TheJerkMachine

yeah its about loneleyness and how people think they are above other people, and they are the most lonely

    • adam

      wtf this lyrics are wrong!

    • Daniel

the lyrics are wrong but this song is awsum.
